There are some areas that we consider it’s particularly important to support. These are described below, and in more depth in our Donations Policy.
We’re especially interested to hear from groups and projects working within these areas in Waikato communities.
Supporting families, young people and older people
We strongly support projects that address the underlying causes of social problems, including projects that support families and protect children and older people.
Encouraging participation and inclusion
We value activities that give all people opportunities to feel part of their community, whether for education, work or leisure. We like to hear about projects that promote participation in sport, recreation, the arts, and community and cultural celebrations.
We know that much of the work to improve the wellbeing of communities is done by volunteers. We fund activities that promote, train and support volunteers and their invaluable contributions.
Supporting iwi and Māori communities
We are committed to honouring Te Tiriti o Waitangi, and strongly support projects and groups that foster resilient and vibrant whanau, hapu and iwi. Our priorities include funding for marae development and significant Māori-focussed projects.
Preserving and celebrating cultural identity
We recognise the importance of history and community identity, and support initiatives by and for Pacific peoples and other ethnic communities.
Building resilient communities
Some Waikato communities have distinct needs – often due to their size, location or demographics. We’re keen to support initiatives that improve the wellbeing of these communities, providing the same opportunities and quality of life available to those living elsewhere. This includes working alongside groups with established networks in high-needs communities, and supporting them to access information and funding opportunities.
Strengthening the community and voluntary sector
Great work in the community requires strong and viable groups. We fund management and operational infrastructure for non-profit community groups; work with them to improve capacity and sustainability; encourage accountability and evaluation; and support collaboration and advocacy to strengthen the community and voluntary sector.
